Windows Vista SP1 is set to be released any moment. If you want to get a jump on the download and install that takes multiple restarts and a full 2 hours. At least for me. However once it is installed Service Pack 1 really feels smooth.

Here is the script to change your registry to allow for the windows update download:

Mikes Retro Software of the Week 2/13/08

Little known(unless your a XP expert) Applications from Microsoft that really never went anywhere.

Like the "shplayer" that is or was supposed to be the Shell media player for XP however rumor has it being axed on or before RTM.

On a different note another outsourced XP(media player 9)powertoy for having a video screen saver was very cool until Microsoft released Media player 10 and 11 and the app broke. Since the original writer (AnalogX) of the app has not been heard from for a while no more updates were performed sadly(IMHO). So I present two applications that are retro to the point of not working on or with Windows Vista or Windows XP sp2. Enjoy!

Rockband Drumset works on Windows.

So I was surfing Youtube for my latest and greatest music videos when I got the urge to see if anyone had posted some interesting videos on Rockband.

Rock Band Drums on the PC.

To my suprise I found this dude had put together an app to use your drums that are included with the Rockband game on you pc. This is so cool. I can now play the drums record my session and share it with the world via Youtube or your favorite video site. Novell’s NetDrive.

Transferring files to and from your blog’s web server can become a nuisance. Most of the pain is from having to use an FTP program to move your files instead of the file manager you are accustom to. Novell’s NetDrive can make this file juggling almost transparent. NetDrive lets you map your FTP server just like a local drive. Manage your files exactly like you would your offline files and NetDrive will do the uploading and downloading almost transparently.

Licensing restrictions keep Novell from distributing netdrive.exe on their web site so you will need to find it on the web.

System Requirements: Windows XP-Vista an FTP Account to connect to. A lot of patience due the fact this software was buggy to begin with.

Windows 7(seven) Preview

So we all love windows vista right? Right? mmmm... ok well how bout the next version? Maybe a complete rebuild of the NT kernel? Sounds like the promises we heard for windows vista that took 6 years to deliver without the promises. Makes Vista sounds alot like windows ME?

Eric Traut talks Windows 7 and MinWin from Long Zheng on Vimeo.

The new kernel is called MinWin? MinWin, a much smaller kernel of the operating system that takes up only 40 MB of memory.

This will definitly be something to watch as it is slated to be RTM'd in late 2009

.NET Framework Released Today.

Developers, Developers, Developers! Your source code is now public. At least the .NET framework. Woot! According to Scott Gutherie Microsofts ASP.net Guru.

The Available source code will include:

.NET Base Class Libraries (including System, System.CodeDom, System.Collections, System.ComponentModel, System.Diagnostics, System.Drawing, System.Globalization, System.IO, System.Net, System.Reflection, System.Runtime, System.Security, System.Text, System.Threading, etc).

ASP.NET (System.Web, System.Web.Extensions)

Windows Forms (System.Windows.Forms)

Windows Presentation Foundation (System.Windows)

ADO.NET and XML (System.Data and System.Xml)

VS 2008 will download both the symbols and source files on demand from the MSDN reference servers as you debug throughout the framework code. However the source code will be available for download shortly for you know documentation purposes.

Reference License

The .NET Framework source is being released under a read-only reference license. When we announced that we were releasing the source back in October, some people had concerns about the potential impact of their viewing the source. To help clarify and address these concerns, we made a small change to the license to specifically call out that the license does not apply to users developing software for a non-Windows platform that has “the same or substantially the same features or functionality” as the .NET Framework. If the software you are developing is for Windows platforms, you can look at the code, even if that software has "the same or substantially the same features or functionality" as the .NET Framework.

This is a huge(giant) leap for microsoft as their code or frameworks have all previously been closed source.
